Wardrobe Mistress: Day/night wardrobe; YSL shoes
Q I work in PR and attend lots of evening events. I never have timeto go home and change, so I need a wardrobe that goes from day tonight. I am medium height and a size 12. Any suggestions?
A
This versatile dress, by Diane von Furstenberg, offers the best ofboth worlds (£314;

). It is smart enough for the office, and with a little blackjacket, it will look polished for evening. The fitted shape andsilky top also mean it will work for dressier occasions.(There’s an all-black version too.) The high-waisted cut isvery flattering for a curvy figure and will make you look taller.For a high-street equivalent, try Dorothy Perkins for a two-in-onedress (below left, £35).
Q I like YSL Tribute platform shoes, but have I left it too late toget a pair? And will they still be fashionable for autumn? If not,what should I buy?
A
YSL’s Tribute sandals have achieved modern-classic status.They haven’t been around long enough to gain the appeal of aChanel 2.55 or Hermès Kelly bag (both designed more than 50years ago), but neither are they a fad. YSL maintains interest inits blockbuster shoe by producing it in new colours and tinkeringwith the fabric and details. The latest is a disco-styled Tributein turquoise satin, trimmed with gold piping (£550).Impossibly high platforms are still a big trend for autumn, and,ironically, the only thing that could bring down the Tribute is itsown success. When a fashion item becomes too popular, it loses itsappeal. Give it another six months and the Tribute will reach thatpoint. Some fashion insiders are already looking for alternativeparty shoes - something not everyone knows about. My money is onYSL’s Army sandals (in gold leather, £430). Theskyscraper platforms are similar to the Tributes, but have a morerobust sole. The slender, minimalist straps also show off more ofyour feet. Tilda Swinton and Kate Moss have both been spotted inthese recently. Like the Tribute, they come in different fabricsand colours.
Q I noticed a Japanese girl in a floaty skirt and slim-fittingblack leather jacket the other day and am hunting for somethingsimilar that I can wear all year round, as well as with floraldresses. Given that we’re well into summer already, I fear Imight have left it too late. What are my options?
A
The expensive option would be a Balenciaga biker jacket. It issuper-fitted, flattering and you can wear it until it falls apart(£1,410; brownsfashion.com). For a mid-range version, try theLA label Mike & Chris, which specialises in cool leatherjackets (below). On the high street, Topshop has a leather bikerjacket for £100.
