Wardrobe Function: German Athletes Have T-Shirt Choice

Wardrobe Function: German Athletes Have T-Shirt ChoiceI doubt anyone will read so far down this list of comments, butwhatever.People here in the states and europe are as brainwashed as thosepeople they claim to be brainwashed are in China. I am not going tobring up the old arguments that is being repeated here and in otherforums a million times already. I just want to ask some simplequestions.1. How many of you have actually been to china?2. Do you even know where Tibet is?(don't just say its inchina. Don't even look up a map before answering.)3. Do you know the history of tibet at all(don't repeat whatyou heard from news. Don't look up on some biased websitelike freetibet.org)Most people don't seem to realize that it took over 200 yearsfor democracy to develop to the way it is now in America afteranexations, civil war, and civil rights movement. It is a greatsystem, no doubt about that, but it still isn't perfect as wehave seen with Iraq and etc. And don't forget, America hadthe advantage to start with a clean sheet of paper, no preexistingpolitical, social, economic structure to hamper the development. In England, it took about 800 years to develop the same level ofdemocracy starting with the Magna Carter. And still there is someproblems with the balance of power concerning how the britishmilitary swear loyalty to the monarchy and not to the parliament orthe constitution. In China, a country with 5000 years of history and constant civilwars and chaos in the last century. Do you really want China tochange overnight? that China should just immediately become a fullfledge democracy tomorrow because you hear sensational news abouthuman rights violations in the news? If you want China to be likethat, you might as well as just drop a few nukes there too. becausethat's exactly what you are doing with your demands. If Chinachanges that fast overnight, it will be CHAOS!!! millions willprobably die from the social upheaval. You don't believe me?well according to Chinese government's own statistics, rightnow there are over 60,000 protest in china every years because ofthe changing economic landscape. If China becomes like USAtomorrow, it will be just a repeat of the fall of SovietUnion.(economic, social collapse, only worse with a population of1.3 billion) dragging down the rest of the world with it andbecoming fascist again like Putin russia because of the socialdisorder. I am not saying the communist party is good or anythingclose to that, but given the fact that within the last 20 years,China changed more than any other nation in the whole history ofmankind. We should at least give them the benefit of time to slowlygrow into a democracy. If you have a compelling argument against what I said, I would loveto hear them.for disclosure, I am a Chinese American who hate Chineseculture(just can't stand it)Posted by simon

In South Africa, a T-shirt for testing August 3-8 in Mexico City ...

In South Africa, a T-shirt for testing August 3-8 in Mexico City ...Johannesburg - All is fair in love and war, they say.In fighting a disease that is often compared to a war in SouthAfrica because it claims around 1,000 lives a day, paying people totake a free HIV test is not seen as a step too far. With an estimated 5.5 million people, or 18.3 per cent of thepopulation, infected with HIV, South Africa bears the heaviestburden of the global pandemic. For years the government and NGOs have been imploring people toknow their status to avoid spreading the disease to others. But thestigma that surrounds the largely sexually-transmitted virus meansmany people are reluctant to get tested, once or regularly.New Start, a non-profit HIV-testing organization, estimates thatonly one in three South Africans has ever taken an HIV test.To lure people into getting tested, NGOs and corporate houses havestarted lacing their moral and health arguments with monetarysweeteners.Cash, baseball caps, T-shirts and free concert tickets are justsome of the incentives on offer for South Africans who agree toundergo the five-minute HIV rapid test.Earlier this month, the Sunday Times newspaper and medicalinsurance company Discovery Health announced a 100,000-rand(13,200- dollar) reward each month, over a one-year period, for aperson who has taken an HIV test. The first winner is to beannounced in August.Using cash incentives has already proved successful with ademographic that is notoriously sceptical about testing - poverty-stricken men. This year, the Men By the Side of the Road charity began offeringunemployed men aged between 15 and 60 the equivalent of one day'scasual labour, or 75 rands (10 dollars), to test for HIV.All 500 men approached agreed to be tested, the charity's founderCharles Maisel said. 'Nobody says no. We had 100-per-cent testingsuccess. There's a waiting list now of several hundred.'Participants who test positive are referred to a clinic forcounselling and treatment, while the HIV-negative men are invitedto join a sort of loyalty programme. For another 75 rands, they can test again in three months - a cyclethat continues each time a test comes back clear. A man who staysHIV-negative for a full year is invited to bring his whole familyfor testing, and further boost his earnings.'We incentivize people to stay negative,' said Maisel, but admittedthat with just one batch of tests done, it was too early to saywhether the money would motivate people to practise safe sex. It's not just NGOs which are looking for new ways to boost HIV-testing levels. Diamond-mining giant De Beers has given new impetusto its free voluntary counselling and testing programme for staffby throwing in gifts of caps and T-shirts.Jeans manufacturer Levi's provides a free pair of passes to itsannual Rage for the Revolution HIV awareness concerts to anyone whohas taken an HIV test.'We're at the centre of an epidemic. We need to think outside thebox,' said New Start technical advisor Scott Billy. However, in one township at least, some people are coming forwardon their own.Skhumbuzo Ndweru has been preparing residents of the sprawlingAlexandra township with 400,000 residents in northern Johannesburgfor the potentially life- changing needle prick since 2001.His little office at Alexandra health clinic is patients' last stopbefore they have their blood tested for HIV. It is also Ndweru whohas to break the news of their status - a matter of a 15-minute-before-and-after discussion in a clinic with only two testingcounsellors for 3,000 patients each year.Ndweru says that while most of his patients are still referred fortesting by a doctor after exhibiting symptoms of HIV, likeshingles, more and more seemingly healthy people are anxious toknow their status.'Most come because their partner tested positive, but some couplesalso test together before they have a baby,' he said, estimatingthat these 'self-referrals' now make up 40 per cent of his cases. While the trend is encouraging, it's not enough for some healthexperts, who are calling for more drastic measures to curb thespread of the virus, including mandatory testing. The main proponent of mandatory testing, the founder of theSouthern African HIV/AIDS Clinicians' Society, Francois Venter, argues that the greater public good served by everyone knowingtheir status should triumph over the rights of the individual notto be tested. His proposal has provoked the ire of rights activists but the ideahas already taken root in other African countries. NeighbouringMalawi has bounced about plans to introduce a bill requiringpregnant women to undergo HIV testing. In Botswana, patientsvisiting a doctor have to 'opt out' of routine HIV testing.

Mark's got his Eye on new world of affiliate marketing

Mark's got his Eye on new world of affiliate marketingMark's got his Eye on new world of affiliate marketingMark Richardson29/ 7/2008THE Holy grail of turning new technology into business success hadeluded more than a few companies, but one Manchester-based firm ison the right path.R.O. Eye launched into the brave new world of affiliate marketing inOctober, 2004, and after starting out with a staff of two thecompany had grown to 21 people and a projected turnover of 7.5m.Director and founder Mark Kuhillow's career stated at Auto Trader, before he moved to MediaVest, were he was asked to establish the interactive arm before decidingto branch out on his own.Mark says: "I'd always had a burning desire to go for it on my own,so I resigned to launch R.O. Eye."There were quite a few options in terms of people wanting to backthe business. The big agency networks were interested, but theywanted 65 per cent. So I launched it on my own with a second childon the way and 20,000 in the bank, and started work with mycolleague Colin Telford." Like all good ideas, the principle behindthe business was simple. The growing field of affiliated marketingwas dominated by technology companies who provided the know-how,but offered no marketing knowledge whatsoever.New fieldMark's approach was to bring the expertise of the traditionalmarketing sector to bear on the new field of digital marketing. He said: "We could see that affiliated market programmes were goingto be a huge sector and at the time none of the other agencies werefocusing on it."The networks were just technology companies with absolutely nomarketing services so we decided to bring in agency methodology, such as dealing with clients, dealing with suppliers and executingmarketing strategies. Basically, all the skills we already had andit seemed obvious to us that we had a good business model."We have created our own sophisticated planning tools in-house, butessentially we are a marketing services company that utilises otherpeople's technology."Mark's vision has paid off in spectacular fashion t-shrit with R.O. Eyeemerging as the leading affiliate management agency in the UK withclients such as Alliance et Leicester and Marks et Spencer. However, with traditional advertising spending at an all-time low,the future may not be as rosy, but Mark remains upbeat."We are really well positioned," said Mark. "Everyone is going tofeel it, there are no two ways about it. But advertising spend isnaturally migrating towards digital because it's so much moreaccountable, and far more efficient."

Mullen, Timberland win award Wenham ad agency July 28, 2008 Mullen Said its media agency, media HUB, and client Timberland Co. Have won an award from Media Week magazine for the best media plan that spent less than $10 million. The award-winning campaign was for the "eco-conscious product launch" of Timberland's Earth keepers boot collection, Mullen said. The boots were made from recycled materials, and it was decided that recycled materials would also be used in the marketing campaign. For example, billboards from the campaign have been "repurposed into reusable tote bags which are currently being sold at Timberland retail stores," Mullen said. The image above, provided by Mullen, is of a kiosk at a shopping mall that promoted the Earth keepers line; a boot sits atop a pile of recyclable plastic water bottles, Mullen said. In addition, Mullen said in a press release, "The carbon dioxide emissions associated with the commercial air time of the campaign -across television, radio, and Internet - were offset with wind power from the Jiminy Peak Mountain Resort wind project in Western Massachusetts." Headquartered in New Hampshire, Timberland is known for its rugged outdoor apparel and footwear. (By Chris Ready, Globe staff)

What a Pimp Reads Yo yo yo, July 28, 2008 First off, this Corey Davis is a class-A punk, for what he did tothese girls and women. (I gots some other names to call this punk, but this is a family paper and Dwayne Biven try to keep his posts classy.) After reading the PSR, I say twenty-three years in prisonain't hardly enough. Second, yo, my hearts go out to the women who had they statements as part of the PSR and all the other women this punk hurt. Stay strong, ladies!! We all rootin for y'all!! Third, I do know what search engine the Feds be using, but it tokomak about two minutes to track down Item #52 in the PDF evidence list, a book whose title I won't write out here butlet's just say it's slang for a prostitute and rhymes with "more" and is at and I think it clear what this book is about, so how come the Fed couldn't figure it out is beyond me. Amazon reviewers give itfive stars (127 customer reviews), but I'm deep into RohintonMistry's "A Fine Balance" and honestly don't see myself adding this to my reading list. Peace everybody! Posted by Dwaine Bevels

Casino, workers set for bargaining blitzJuly 28, 2008"We had an issue with that," said Katherine Schulenburg, spokeswoman for Lac Loamy Casino. "The problem is not the jeans, it's the pockets: The uniforms don't have pockets. You can easily hide a token or money in them."The sides will resume talks today, with a negotiating blitz scheduled to start at noon."We were supposed to wear jeans on Thursday, but the company called us and said, 'If you don't wear jeans, we will sit down with youths Saturday and we'll listen to your pension plan ideas," said Jean-Pierre Prolix, the CUPE union representative for the Lac LeamyCasino workers.According to both Ms. Schulenburg and Mr. Prolix, the key issue in the current round of negotiations is the pension plan. The union is seeking a defined-benefit pension plan, in which employees are entitled to fixed percentages of their salaries upon retirement. At present, the casino workers have a plan in which the company matches employees' contributions up to five per cent of their salary per year, but the employees must then decide how to invest that money."It's not our intention to change the type of pension plan that is offered, but we're certainly willing to look at it to see if improvements can be made," Ms. Schulenburg said."Basically, we want the same pension plan that the federal or provincial government has," Mr. Prolix said."We want the assurance of this type of pension rather than having to worry about how stocks or bonds are doing."lcasey@thecitizen.canwest.comThe Ottawa Citizen 2008
